LNP | LancasterOnline Gift Agreement Finalized, Officially Making it a Nonprofit Newsroom for First Time in 231-Year History
Nonprofit Status Unlocks Community Giving to Sustain a Vibrant Future for Local Journalism in Lancaster
LANCASTER, Pennsylvania (January 8, 2026) – LNP | LancasterOnline announced it officially became a nonprofit newsroom today, a move designed to ensure the long-term viability of the 231-year-old community journalistic institution.
Under the terms of the agreement announced in November and finalized today following legal and regulatory approval, Pennon gifted LNP | LancasterOnline’s assets to Always Lancaster, a nonprofit created and led by award-winning journalist David Greene, to ensure the legacy and commitment of LNP | LancasterOnline endures into the future.
“This is the start of a brand-new era for LNP | LancasterOnline,” Greene said. “Becoming a nonprofit will help ensure our community continues to receive the high-quality, independent local reporting that matters most to Lancaster.”
Greene is serving as interim publisher while details for the new operation are finalized and a search for the new publisher is conducted. Executive Editor Tom Murse and President Chris Fidler will continue to manage the newsroom day-to-day, and readers can continue to expect the high-quality local journalism they know and rely on without interruption.
The move to nonprofit status creates new opportunities for innovation and community involvement. LNP | LancasterOnline will support local reporting through subscriptions, advertising and philanthropic contributions moving forward.
“We’re excited to reach this milestone and to officially begin our new chapter,” Murse said. “Our success depends on everyone’s contributions: Our staff who continue to provide the best in local news; our readers who are the reason we do this work; and the generosity of donors who believe in the value of community journalism.”
